Advice on Grinding and Clenching Teeth for Children

Grinding Teeth in Children
Bruxism, better known as the grinding and clenching of teeth, is a condition that affects about 30 percent of children while they sleep. Oftentimes, they will outgrow the issue, but it can cause damage, discomfort, and even headaches. Many times, external stress factors can also cause or contribute to it.

Teething
Until children are 12 or 13 years old, their permanent teeth are still growing in. They may occasionally grind their teeth because of the discomfort this creates. This type of bruxism generally resolves itself once the new teeth emerge through the gums.

Teeth Alignment
Having a mixture of adult and baby teeth often causes them to misalign inside the mouth. During this transition, gaps in various places can create an urge to grind. This, again, is generally not an issue you need to worry about, as it should stop once all the adult teeth arrive.

However, if the teeth are coming in crooked, it can contribute to the problem, and you should consult your pediatric dentist.

Stress Levels
The stress a child experiences during the day can follow them into their sleep, making them more likely to clench or grind their teeth at night. If your child is prone to anxiety or nervousness, they may be more susceptible to bruxism. The best option is to figure out what is stressing them and find ways to help them manage and reduce that stress during the day.

Next Steps
If you notice that your child is grinding their teeth, it is best to seek the advice of your pediatric dentist. They can provide guidance on the best treatment options. If the issue persists, a night mouthguard is often recommended to protect the teeth’s enamel. These should always be used under the guidance of your pediatric dentist to ensure they fit properly and do not adversely affect your child’s growing jaw and teeth.
